Description

This object is a reflection nebula located 5000 light years away in the southern constellation of Canis Major. The nebula is mainly illuminated by the bright blue star HD 57281, which appears to be at least a triple star.

Herbig-Haro jets (HH72 series) have been identified in the darkest patch of the nebula (to the right of the triple star). These jets are faintly visible as a tiny reddish area in the dark region.

Below the reflection nebula is the dark molecular cloud LDN 1660. The background of the image has a slight reddish hue due to the surrounding Ha nebulosity of the giant emission nebula, Sh2-310. The image is not as crisp as I would like due to the southern declination.
